LASIK Center Accreditation & Safety Checkpoints
Updated 7/2/2025
Certifications and safety protocols are signals—not guarantees. Here’s what they mean and how to evaluate them.
Accreditation 101
- AAAHC / Joint Commission: Voluntary accreditations that assess processes, safety, and quality improvement in ambulatory settings.
- Why it helps: Indicates a clinic is following established standards and subject to periodic review.
Safety checkpoints to ask about
- Device maintenance: How often are lasers calibrated and serviced?
- Infection control: Surface prep, sterile technique, and room turnover protocols
- Surgical verification: “Time‑out” confirmations for identity, eye, and treatment plan
- After‑hours care: Clear access to a clinician for urgent issues
Surgeon‑level practices
- Consistent pre‑op measurements and cross‑checks
- Personalized optical zone and treatment planning
- Strong dry eye management before/after surgery
Transparency and outcomes
Ask how the clinic tracks outcomes and enhancements. Clinics that measure and share aggregate results often have stronger systems.
Bottom line: Accreditation, documented protocols, and responsive aftercare together signal a safety‑first culture.
