LASIK and Autoimmune / Chronic Conditions

Updated 7/2/2025

Some autoimmune and chronic conditions affect wound healing or dryness. Eligibility is individualized.

Conditions that prompt extra caution

  • Autoimmune diseases with active inflammation or poor wound healing
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid disease impacting ocular surface
  • Severe dry eye syndromes

What surgeons evaluate

  • Disease control and medication stability
  • Corneal mapping and thickness
  • Tear film quality and meibomian gland function

Timing and clearance

  • Coordinate with your primary or specialist for clear documentation of stability.
  • Tackle ocular surface disease before surgery.

Alternatives when needed

  • PRK instead of LASIK in select corneas
  • ICL or lens‑based procedures when surface or tissue considerations make corneal surgery less ideal

Informed decision

Share a complete medical and medication history. Your surgeon will recommend the safest path and timing—sometimes that’s not LASIK, and that’s okay.
